The Memphis Grizzlies picked point guard Tony Wroten Jr. in the first round

The Memphis Grizzlies selected 19-year old point guard Tony Wroten Jr. out of Washington in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft.  Wroten is 6’5″, 205 pounds.  He played in 35 games at Washington last year and he averaged 30.3 minutes, 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.9 steals per game.  Not bad for his only year in college.  But, he only shot 44.3% from the floor, 16.1% (9 of 56) from three point range and 58.3% from the free throw line last year.  He will learn by backing up Mike Conley in Memphis.

The Memphis Grizzlies have five free agents heading into this summer

The Grizzlies have three restricted free agents (O.J. Mayo, Marreese Speights and Darrell Arthur) and two unrestricted free agents (Gilbert Arenas and Hamed Haddadi) heading into this summer.  The Grizzlies will likely match for O.J. Mayo, as long as he doesn’t get a massive offer on the free agent market.  The Grizzlies would also like to bring back Marreese Speights and Darrell Arthur, but they won’t overpay for them either.  The Grizzlies will likely let Gilbert Arenas and Hamed Haddadi walk this summer.

The Memphis Grizzlies will likely take the best player available in the NBA Draft

The Grizzlies have a pretty solid team right now, so I look for them to take the best player available when they pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.  They own the #25 overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.  On my mock draft, found on, I have the Grizzlies drafting shooting guard Dion Waiters out of Syracuse.  He would give the Grizzlies even more firepower off the bench.
