Jerryd Bayless is playing really well so far in February for the Memphis Grizzlies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General by joelapinski on Tuesday 26 February 2013 at 3:03 pm

24-year old backup point guard Jerryd Bayless has been playing really well so far this month for the Grizzlies.  He has played in 10 games (1 start) so far in February and he is averaging 24.2 minutes, 10.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.  Bayless has now played in 55 games (4 starts) for the Grizzlies overall this year and he is averaging 20.3 minutes, 7.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.  Bayless was a very underrated pickup by the Grizzlies over the summer, as he allows them to watch Mike Conley’s workload.

Memphis Grizzlies 76, Brooklyn Nets 72

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General by joelapinski on Monday 25 February 2013 at 3:00 am

The Grizzlies turned up the D in this game as they held the Nets to 37.7% shooting from the floor, which negated the fact that they were out-rebounded 44-35 by them tonight.  Zach Randolph (16 points, 14 rebounds and 1 blocked shot) and Marc Gasol (14 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocked shots) led the way for the Grizzlies tonight.  Tony Allen (12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocked shots), Tayshaun Prince (11 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 3 steals) and Mike Conley (10 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals) also pitched in with solid games for the Grizzlies.  The Grizzlies have improved to 37-18 on the year.

Memphis Grizzlies 88, Orlando Magic 82

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,Game Recaps,General by joelapinski on Saturday 23 February 2013 at 1:46 pm

The Magic only dressed 8 players last night and it seemed like the Grizzlies took them a little lightly.  The Grizzlies did outrebound the Magic 52-42 last night and that was a big factor in the win.  Marc Gasol (19 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal) and Zach Randolph (16 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 blocked shot) led the way for the Grizzlies last night.  Mike Conley (14 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists and 2 steals) and Ed Davis (10 points, 1 rebound and 2 blocked shots in 14 minutes) also pitched in for the Grizzlies in this game.  The Grizzlies improve to 36-18 on the year.

The Memphis Grizzlies have acquired center Dexter Pittman from the Heat

Blogged under Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General,Trades by joelapinski on Thursday 21 February 2013 at 7:16 pm

The Grizzlies have acquired 24-year old center Dexter Pittman and a second round pick in the 2013 NBA Draft.  The Grizzlies gave up the draft rights to 25-year old shooting guard Ricky Sanchez (currently playing in Argentina) and a trade exception.  Pittman played in 4 games (0 starts) for the Heat this year and he averaged 3.0 minutes, 1.5 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.  He has now played in 41 games (6 starts) in his first three years in the NBA and he is averaging 7.9 minutes, 2.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game.  This was a good move for the Grizzlies as they essentially got Pittman for next to nothing.

The Memhis Grizzlies are likely going to bump up Quincy Pondexter’s P.T.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Need to step up by joelapinski on Thursday 21 February 2013 at 4:19 pm

The Grizzlies are likely going to bump up 24-year old shooting guard Quincy Pondexter’s P.T. the rest of the way this year.  He has played in 30 games (1 start) for the Grizzlies so far this year and he is averaging 22.2 minutes, 6.5 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.  He is shooting 42.9% from the floor, 42% from three point range and 76.5% from the free throw line so far this year.  Pondexter has now played in 160 games (15 starts) in his first three years in the NBA and he is averaging 15.0 minutes, 4.1 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.

The Memphis are trying to stay afloat in the Western Conference

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Season Reviews by joelapinski on Sunday 17 February 2013 at 1:35 pm

The Grizzlies head into the All-Star Break with a 33-18 record (64.7%).  The Grizzlies are #4 in the Western Conference, 7.5 games behind the Spurs.  Here is a look at the players who made the biggest impacts for the Grizzlies in the first half of the 2012-13 season:

Team MVP:  Zach Randolph – 31-year old power forward Zach Randolph has stayed healthy this year and the results have been good.  He has played in 49 games (all starts) for the Grizzlies so far this year and he is averaging 35.2 minutes, 15.6 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.  The Grizzlies need him to stay healthy if they are going to make a deep playoff run in 2012-13.

Biggest Surprise:  Darrell Arthur – 24-year old PF/C Darrell Arthur has been playing well this year, after missing a huge chunk of last year and the start of this year due to injury.  Arthur has played in 39 games (0 starts) for the Grizzlies so far this year and he is averaging 17.9 minutes, 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game.  The Grizzlies hope that Arthur can stay healthy the rest of the 2012-13 season.

Biggest Disappointment:  Tony Wroten – 19-year old guard Tony Wroten is looking a little bit overmatched as a rookie so far this year for the Grizzlies.  He has played in 17 games (0 starts) for the Grizzlies so far this year and he is averaging 8.8 minutes, 3.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.  He is only shooting 35.7% from the floor so far this year.  To be fair, he hasn’t gotten the chance to play too much so far this year.

The new guys have had mixed results so far for the Memphis Grizzlies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Need to step up by joelapinski on Thursday 14 February 2013 at 3:24 am

Rudy Gay, Marreese Speights and Wayne Ellington are all now ex-Grizzlies and the players they got in return for them have been getting mixed results.  Small forward Tayshaun Prince has replaced Rudy Gay in the starting lineup for the Grizzlies.  He has played in 6 games (5 starts) so far this year for the Grizzlies and he is averaging 32.3 minutes, 10.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.  24-year old Austin Daye has been Prince’s backup, just like he was in Detroit.  Daye has played in 6 games (0 starts) so far for the Grizzlies and he is averaging 13.3 minutes, 6.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.  Power forward Ed Davis was one of the big keys to the Gay deal and he is off to a slow start for the Grizzlies.  Davis has played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Grizzlies so far and he is averaging 8.0 minutes, 2.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game.  Power forward Jon Leuer is the only guy the Grizzlies got back for Speights, Ellington, Selby and a first round pick.  Leuer has played in 4 games (0 starts) for the Grizzlies so far this year and he is averaging 2.0 minutes, 0.5 points and 0.3 rebounds per game.  The Grizzlies need these guys to step up in the very near future.

Tony Allen is off to a good start in February for the Memphis Grizzlies

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Steppin Up by joelapinski on Monday 11 February 2013 at 6:16 pm

31-year old shooting guard Tony Allen has been looking for his shot a little bit more since the Rudy Gay trade and it has been working out pretty well for the Grizzlies.  Allen has played in 5 games (all starts) so far in February and he is averaging 29.3 minutes, 10.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game.  Allen is shooting 64.7% from the floor so far this month, which is outstanding.  Allen has now played in 47 games (all starts) for the Grizzlies overall this year and he is averaging 27.3 minutes, 8.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game.  The Grizzlies likely have no problem with Allen shooting more moving forward as they try to continue to replace Rudy Gay’s offensive output.

The Memphis Grizzlies hope that Darrell Arthur steps up soon

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Need to step up by joelapinski on Tuesday 5 February 2013 at 4:28 pm

The Grizzlies dealt Marreese Speights to save money on the salary cap, but they did it with the idea that 24-year old PF/C Darrell Arthur could handle a bigger role.  The Raptors wanted Arthur in the Rudy Gay trade, but the Grizzlies refused to add him to the deal.  Arthur has played in 34 games (0 starts) for the Grizzlies so far this year and he is averaging 18.0 minutes, 7.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game.  He has now played in 222 games (74 starts) in his first four years in the NBA and he is averaging 18.7 minutes, 6.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game.  Despite getting Ed Davis from the Raptors, I still look for Arthur to see his fair share of P.T. as the Grizzlies’ front office likes him.
