Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Coaching,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 27 May 2016 at 5:24 am

The Memphis Grizzlies have given 41-year old David Fizdale a 4-year, $16 million dollar deal to be their new head coach.  Fizdale has been an assistant coach for the Miami Heat for the last 8 years, so he helped them win two NBA Title Rings!  He also was an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors (2003-2004) and the Atlanta Hawks (2004-2008).  But, he has never been a head coach in the NBA.  The Grizzlies are taking a risk here with this hire, but they like Fizdale.

The Memphis Grizzlies have fired 42-year old head coach Dave Joerger.  Joerger was seeking to interview with other teams, so the Grizzlies obliged by firing him!  Joerger led the Grizzlies to a 42-40 (.512) during the regular season, despite a roster depleted due to big time injuries to key players.  They then got swept in the playoffs by the San Antonio Spurs.  Joerger was 147-99 (59.8%) during the regular season in his three years in charge of the Grizzlies and he was also 9-13 (40.9%) in the playoffs.  The Grizzlies will move fast to try to find a replacement for Joerger, who was a solid head coach for them.

The Memphis Grizzlies have signed 24-year old point guard Ray McCallum and 28-year old power forward Alex Stephenson (to a 10-day contract).  McCallum played in 31 games (3 starts) earlier this year for the Kings and he averaged 8.3 minutes, 2.2 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.1 assists per game.  He has now played in 144 games (43 starts) in his first three years in the NBA and he is averaging 18.0 minutes, 5.9 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.  McCallum and Briante Weber will likely share the point guard spot until Mike Conley returns to action (which is going to be a while).  Stephenson gives the Grizzlies a much needed big man.  He played in 4 games (0 starts) for the Clippers earlier this year and he averaged 3.0 minutes, 0.5 points, 0.5 rebounds and 0.5 blocked shots per game for them.  He also played in 31 games (all starts) earlier this year for the Iowa Energy of the D-League and he averaged 34.2 minutes, 15.9 points, 13.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.4 blocked shots per game.  Stephenson could get into the rotation as a backup player for the Grizzlies.

The Memphis Grizzlies have dealt Tony Wroten to the 76ers

Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 23 August 2013 at 6:18 pm

The Grizzlies have dealt 20-year old shooting guard Tony Wroten to the 76ers for a future heavily protected future 2nd round pick.  Wroten played in 35 games (0 starts) as a rookie for the Grizzlies last year and he averaged 7.8 minutes, 2.6 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.  He only shot 38.4% from the floor, 25% from the three point line and 72.4% from the free throw line last year…..which was not good.  Wroten was a first round pick (#25 overall) in the 2012 NBA Draft, so he has to be looked as a failure with the Grizzlies.  To be fair though, he didn’t get enough time to show what he can really do on the basketball court.

The Memphis Grizzlies acquire Fab Melo from the Celtics

Blogged under Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General,Trades by joelapinski on Thursday 15 August 2013 at 6:25 pm

The Grizzlies have acquired 23-year old center Fab Melo from the Boston Celtics for 25-year old forward Donte Greene.  Melo was a first round pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.  He played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Celtics last year and he averaged 6.0 minutes, 1.2 points and 0.5 rebounds per game.  But, he also played in 33 games (31 starts) for the Maine Red Claws of the D-League and he averaged 26.2 minutes, 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 3.1 blocked shots per game.  Greene signed late in the 2012-13 season with the Grizzlies, but he never got into any games for them.  This was a good flier to take, as some big guys develop later on in their careers.

UPDATE:  (8/31/2013) – The Grizzlies have waived Fab Melo.

The Memphis Grizzlies sign Mike Miller

Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 5:41 pm

The Grizzlies have signed 33-year old SG/SF Mike Miller.  Miller played in 59 games (17 starts) for the Heat last year and he averaged 15.3 minutes, 4.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.  He also shot 41.7% from the three point line as he still has a good shooting stroke.  Miller has now played in 831 games (549 starts) in his first 13 years in the NBA and he is averaging 29.9 minutes, 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.  Miller has shot 46.1% from the floor, 40.7% from three point range and 76.7% from the free throw line so far in his NBA career.  Miller played six years earlier in his career with the Grizzlies.  Miller has played in 371 games (277 starts) for the Grizzlies and he averaged 32.0 minutes, 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.  Miller is the Grizzlies’ all-time leader in three point shots made with 737 of them.  He is also #9 in games played (371), #8 in defensive rebounds (1,584), #10 in total rebounds (1,813), #5 in assists (1,221) and #5 in points scored (5,403) in Grizzlies’ history.  This was a good move for the Grizzlies as Miller should be able to help them off the bench in 2013-14, as long as his back holds up.
