The Memphis Grizzlies have dealt Tony Wroten to the 76ers

Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Friday 23 August 2013 at 6:18 pm

The Grizzlies have dealt 20-year old shooting guard Tony Wroten to the 76ers for a future heavily protected future 2nd round pick.  Wroten played in 35 games (0 starts) as a rookie for the Grizzlies last year and he averaged 7.8 minutes, 2.6 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.  He only shot 38.4% from the floor, 25% from the three point line and 72.4% from the free throw line last year…..which was not good.  Wroten was a first round pick (#25 overall) in the 2012 NBA Draft, so he has to be looked as a failure with the Grizzlies.  To be fair though, he didn’t get enough time to show what he can really do on the basketball court.

The Memphis Grizzlies acquire Fab Melo from the Celtics

Blogged under Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General,Trades by joelapinski on Thursday 15 August 2013 at 6:25 pm

The Grizzlies have acquired 23-year old center Fab Melo from the Boston Celtics for 25-year old forward Donte Greene.  Melo was a first round pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.  He played in 6 games (0 starts) for the Celtics last year and he averaged 6.0 minutes, 1.2 points and 0.5 rebounds per game.  But, he also played in 33 games (31 starts) for the Maine Red Claws of the D-League and he averaged 26.2 minutes, 9.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, 0.8 assists and 3.1 blocked shots per game.  Greene signed late in the 2012-13 season with the Grizzlies, but he never got into any games for them.  This was a good flier to take, as some big guys develop later on in their careers.

UPDATE:  (8/31/2013) – The Grizzlies have waived Fab Melo.

The Memphis Grizzlies sign Mike Miller

Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Thursday 25 July 2013 at 5:41 pm

The Grizzlies have signed 33-year old SG/SF Mike Miller.  Miller played in 59 games (17 starts) for the Heat last year and he averaged 15.3 minutes, 4.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.  He also shot 41.7% from the three point line as he still has a good shooting stroke.  Miller has now played in 831 games (549 starts) in his first 13 years in the NBA and he is averaging 29.9 minutes, 12.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.  Miller has shot 46.1% from the floor, 40.7% from three point range and 76.7% from the free throw line so far in his NBA career.  Miller played six years earlier in his career with the Grizzlies.  Miller has played in 371 games (277 starts) for the Grizzlies and he averaged 32.0 minutes, 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.  Miller is the Grizzlies’ all-time leader in three point shots made with 737 of them.  He is also #9 in games played (371), #8 in defensive rebounds (1,584), #10 in total rebounds (1,813), #5 in assists (1,221) and #5 in points scored (5,403) in Grizzlies’ history.  This was a good move for the Grizzlies as Miller should be able to help them off the bench in 2013-14, as long as his back holds up.

The Memphis Grizzlies acquire Nick Calathes from the Mavericks

Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General,Trades by joelapinski on Monday 22 July 2013 at 10:00 pm

The Grizzlies have acquired 24-year old point guard Nick Calathes from the Mavericks for a 2nd round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.  Calathes was the #45 overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Timberwolves.  Calathes played in 61 games in Europe last year and he averaged 30.6 minutes, 14.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game.  Calathes is planning on coming stateside to play for the Grizzlies in 2013-14.  I like this deal for the Grizzlies as Calathes has some talent.

The Grizzlies have re-signed 24-year old power forward Jon Leuer to a 3-year, $3 million dollar deal.  Leuer played in 19 games (0 starts) for the Grizzlies last year and he averaged 5.1 minutes, 1.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game.  Leuer played in 28 games (0 starts) overall last year for the Grizzlies and Cavaliers in which he averaged 6.7 minutes, 2.0 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game.  He has now played in 74 games (12 starts) in his first two years in the NBA and he is averaging 10.0 minutes, 3.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game.

The Memphis Grizzlies re-sign Tony Allen

Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Wednesday 3 July 2013 at 12:25 pm

The Grizzlies have re-signed 31-year old shooting guard Tony Allen to a 4-year, $20 million dollar deal.  Allen played in 79 games (all starts) for the Grizzlies last year and he averaged 26.7 minutes, 8.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game.  Allen has now played in 209 games (167 starts) in his first three years with the Grizzlies and he is averaging 24.5 minutes, 9.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game.  Allen has now played in 545 games (249 starts) in his first 9 years in the NBA and he is averaging 20.8 minutes, 8.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game.  This was a good move for the Grizzlies as Allen really turns up the D on a nightly basis for them.

Jerryd Bayless opts in for the 2013-14 season to stay with the Memphis Grizzlies

Blogged under Big Grizzlies News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by joelapinski on Saturday 29 June 2013 at 1:13 pm

24-year old PG/SG Jerryd Bayless has opted in for the 2013-14 season and he will earn $3.14 million bucks.  Bayless played in 80 games (4 starts) for the Grizzlies last year and he averaged 22.1 minutes, 8.7 points, 2.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.  Bayless has now played in 309 games (40 starts) in his first five years in the NBA and he is averaging 19.2 minutes, 8.3 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.  The Grizzlies are probably really happy with Bayless’ decision as he is a really solid backup guard.
